EGR on 81' 300SD

Greetings,
I realize that there are many postings on the EGR valve but I was wondering if an already clean running diesel would be able to pass emissions with it disconnected. Also, if it were to be disconnected, and then reconnected after a couple of years for emissions testing....would the valve be all gunked up and cease to function? And.....would there be a lot of oil/crud that would have to be cleaned out or burned off? The reason I am asking is because I disconnected it the other day and the car did seem to have a bit more power. I then re-connected it because I had to take my car throught emissions testing.

Thanks for your thoughts on the matter
