Most likely a head gasket then, or maybe a front cover leaking.
You can clean the engine up and then spray it down with foot powder, the stuff in the spray can. It will leave a nice white coating all over everything, the black oil will show up nicely. Don't forget the valve cover gasket! Peter

UPDATE- on oil leak!
Thanks for all the help and comic relief!! Maybe we should rename the gropu "Diesel or Mercedes Anonamous" DA or MA ! :-)
Anyway.... 1. Checked oil on Sat morning- midway in add area. Drove approx. 70 miles in the morning. no severe oil leaking this after tightening the ehaust manifold and tensioner ( don't think it was tensioner). Dipstick level was the same. The thermo stat cover area had a think coat of oil on it, thursday night/friday is was COVERED in black!!!!!! SO I reduced theleak, this good. But I do have blue smoke out of the tail pipe. not alot, it wasn't there before, more when cold (some some smoke is normal when cold). Changed the oil yesterday. Ihad some many different viscosities in there from thursday night I just went with a decent ( not great oil) Shell Rotella T 15-40W, I used Mobil Delvac 1 in my old diesel. But I didn't want to spray the road with $$$$ oil!!!! I did another run last night, friens 40 th birthday party and did 100 plus miles. WIth a new filter and putting in appprox. 7.5 liters it used about 1/2-1 liter in the first 50 miles, then I added the other 1/2 liter left over. Checked oil when I got home and was at about the same level. within a 1/4 of a liter after 2-3 minutes drain down time. New filter will absorb 1/2-1 liter of oil. I also changed the o rings on the oil filter shaft. SUmmary- I am not leaking at the rate I was, bubt is still leaking. Only thing tightened of signifance was the exhast manifold and I cleaned out the breather tube ( did NOT appeared blocked). I am not burning oil at thesame rate I was leaking it. Question- number 1 cyl still pumpingoil and burning it or head gasket.? I will find out this week-! THanks to all Steve |

Blue smoke under load is often blown turbo seals -- this was discussed at length last year when someone (I forget who, my appologies) had a W140 350 SD blowing copious smoke and eating oil -- his problem was mostly a bad seal on the shutoff on the IP, but he also had bad turbo seals.
A valve cover seal leaking can poor a large amount of oil out, and it may not stay on the head very well. It would smoke on the manifold, though.... I still think it is very likely you have a bad head gasket - if the seals around the oil channels go, they will leak oil badly. Peter

gsxr has/had a leak from his 603.961 #6 exhaust runner. He's pretty convinced it's a bad exhaust valve seal or guide.
It might be worth replacing the valve seals to see if that gets rid of the leak or slows it down, but on 603 engines, you're a few mintues from having the head off once you're at the valve seals. Attacking the cam bearing sequence in half turn or single turn steps is murder on your back. Did the UV test reveal or confirm anything? Have you pulled the cross over pipe to see if it's wet inside? Update- Head gasket and mAybe more
SORRY FOR NO UPDATE.
OK the head gasket is bad for sure, oil leaking a parting line, both rear aorund #1 pressuree feed area and #6 oil return. Also possible guide or valve stem seals. I only has the car 6 days when I had the real bad day and lost 8 liters. I finnaly got it to the dealer's mechanic to confirm what I found. He looked and It I told him what happened and where it hadbeen leaking from and he agreed with me, head gasket and guides and/or seals. He alos belives the head gasket had being leaking for awhile. The car wasn't used much for he past 4 months or so. I also got confirmation tha the previous onwer had the trubo rebuilt about 5 months ago..... Anyway they are going to fix it. I will keep you posted Steve |

Update found teh problem
Ok guys here is the scoop
#1- head gasket leaking around cyl #1 and #2 #2- the guides and or seals in #1 were suspect. #3- 3 pitted exhaust valves- not sure which cylinders yet. When we pulled the head I went ahead and had all the guides and seals replaces and did a valve job, only 3 valves need to be replaced all the others refaced fine. The oil was coming form the head gasket, VERY brittle and crack marks, NO cracks in the head. the head showed signs of the leaks and some minor corrosion where the water jacket meets the head surface. It cleaned up with just a minor resurfacing. I get the car bakc tomorrow. Yee HAW!!! And YES the previuos owner did replace the turbo about 4-5 months ago with a rebuild turbo. Maybe hte seals went??? Steve |

Oil Leak on w140 Diesel (1993) from Above Exhaust Manifold
It looks like I am blowing oil from the area below the
crossover pipe from the turbo where it attaches to the block or head. Prior to cleaning the engine, it looked like the valve cover gasket was leaking. Now it is just one little spot below where the pipe from the turbo attaches to the head. There appears to be a long metal gasket that is vertical on the left side of the engine (as you are facing the car). The pipe from the turbo is attached to it in the front. Any ideas for repair? Thanks.
