PPG windshield

Had a new windshield installed in my '83 300SD the other day. Was a little shocked that it's a PPG and it has a Mercedes star on it!! I know PPG made some windshields for MB but I was sure that a new one ordered right from the dealer would be Sigla or Sekurit. Guess I was wrong. Anyhow, we'll see how long before the PPG starts pitting and getting sandblasted. Any experiences anyone?

Mine is a PPG and my opinion is the glass is a little soft.

It has pitted, but it is still pretty clear.

Yeah, PPG got the contract for the new S class, too, so they must have branched out and supplied all the usual sizes for OEM.

Same glass as the Corvette and Toyota windsheilds they make here in Evansville.

Meets MB requirements (I think that took awhile!).

Ditto Suginami's comments. My replacement windshield on the 1998 C230 is a little soft, already pitting, and has a curved sand streak from the wiper - less than 6 months old!

My SD has a PPG....I don't know how old it is, but it's at least 3 years, because it was on the car when I bought it. It still looks good...has a couple of small rock chips, and some barely-noticeable marks from the wipers. There's no MB star on it though...Just the PPG logo.

Here is the good news....

If you glass is " soft"..... and I do not know one way or the other about its comparative density...

It may mean it is easier to take out the scratches...

Check with Eastwood Co... they have 'kits'..... but you could also just do some reading and buy the various grades of grit you would need... all the way to " rouge"...

for wider areas there is a universal joint on the back of a circular buffing pad which allows the buffer to stay in cotact with the glass evenly...

KEEP IT MOVING AND WASH WELL BETWEEN GRITS....

Good luck...

My windsheild is original, and really pitted. It's a real PITA to see thru it during sun glare. Although it has no rock chips or cracks, I want to replace it. Damn soft German glass..

The glass company in Arizona asked me which brand I preferred. Had choises from PPG, Sigla and Sekurit. Got the Sekurit with no Star, but hey it was 100% free.

PPG

My 98 E300 has original PPG glass with the star. I have had 4 repairs done in the 11K mi. I have owned the car. There were at least 2 I can spot that were done before I got it.

I also own a 1994 Honda civic which i purchased new and currently has 115K mi. on it. No repairs to the glass (no chips), with much, much more Interstate driving.

What does a new windshield run? I'm going to need one one of these days because of a crack in the lower left side and it leaks a little sometimes on the left side.

My E500 has its original windshield until last year when I replaced it due to pitting only. Now, less than a year later, it has two severe bulls eyes and one semi-circular crack under the driver's windshield wiper!

I used a "genuine Mercedes replacement", but what gives? Is the glass softer/thinner/cheaper than original specs? What is the best mfgr?
