trans slipping? flaring?
Hi,
Thanks for all the help on my last post regarding overfilling. I took my topsider with a nice clean tube, and took out all the fluid I could via the dipstick tube, then added 1 qt of new ATF. The level seems to be just about right, with at most, a very few tiny bubbles in limited spots in the fluid (my trans fluid always had that). However, I still notice a funny thing when shifting. First, a bit of background: -I can only ever feel two shifts, not three, which would seem to be needed to have 4 gears... but RPMs are right at 70 MPH, so it must hit 4th. (I thought these cars 83, 300D, didnt have the second gear start thing) What happens is this: The first shift after a stop is fine, feels smooth and soft. No problems except a slightly longer time to change gears when cold. The second shift that I feel is fine as well if accelerating lightly. Any hard throttle type of start, when hot or cold will go up to about 2000 RPM, then the RPMs will climb to about 2500+, stay there (and speed keeps increasing) then drop a bit as the gear is found and then increase again naturally. If I use an 'inbetween' amount of throttle, the same type of thing will happen, only the RPMs will jump to around 2500, stay there constant as car speed increases some, then will start to increase again, I guess after the correct RPM/speed match is met. What is this indicative of? I think its a flare? Is this most likely vacuum related? I have recently gotten my valves adjusted, but all the vacuum connections look tight. Is this behavior usually fixed by changing the linkages and vacuum connector on the IP? Any info/instructions/help is most appreciated. I want my trans to shift reasonably ok once again. Thanks very much JMH

Turn your vacuum modulator on the transmission clockwise two turns.. then try it out.
