Activated Charcoal is usually used as an air filter...
It adsorbs (not absorb) some bad gas molecules . You can also get it in paper quart containers for fish tank filters.... |

The filter can also be useful if you are following a vehicle that is burning oil or a smelly Diesel.

charcoal filter
michakaveli, 98 e300 here, the charcoal filter is awesome! the PO of my car was a chain smoker and was smoking in my car when i picked it up. he religiously changed this filter every 6 mos. (overkill) and i swear, there was no smoke smell to my car (although i do have mb tex too, which probably helps). i especially appreciated this, as i had quit smoking six months prior to purchase.
i was on a trip to south louisiana during thanksgiving and the farmers were burning old rice fields--what a difference the filter made when driving through the thick smoke for 30 miles. there is a thread on this forum on how often and how to change this filter. if yours doesn't work as well as i think mine does, don't tell me, the placebo effect is fine with me! |

Rick, I did not mention THAT! I was giving the clinical description of what it does...
I wonder if I could put one on my 240, sometimes I get behind a car or truck and it smells like their exhaust is stuck to my grill... ugh.... |

thread...
I have looked too and can't find it. I sometimes seek gillybenztech's counsel on the yahoo mercedes forum--It may be that I ran across the thread there. If I find it, I will post the location.
To totally throw gilly under the bus, he usually fields the late model questions on 'Ask Stretch' at yahoo. You may want to get his input on the matter. Sorry Gilly, but you do seem to love your job! |

Maybe this is what you're looking for:
Carbon Filter 97 E320 I found the most hits searching for "charcoal and filter". The "and" is important so that the computer searches for both words separately, rather then positioned together in the post. BTW, the Bosch site link in the above referenced post doesn't work. But this one should: http://aa.bosch.de/advastaboschaa/Webroot/static/en/produkte/filter/innenraum/einbau/mercedes/e-klasse/200-320-xx-a-061995.pdf

Maybe you could go to the pet store, get a bag of the stuff for aquariums, and stuff it in your cabin air intake. With all of the oil you're burning, maybe you should get another bag and put it over the tailpipe as well.

Fixed my old post's URL
Buy the carbon filter set (it is two filters) from Fastlane. there is also a cabin air filter behind the glovebox that I have got from Fastlane before but it does not show up lately (call Phil at the PartsShop 800 number). That one was REALLY dirty on my car - improved AC performance just by changing it!
The carbon filter is kinda high$ but it's one of my all time favorite automotive features! I get about 20k miles from a set (leaving it on all the time). Then I start to smell exhaust. -Tom

very cool
Hello All;
Does anyone know if an 85 300SD would have one of these interior Charcoal filters? I hope so. And if so, where would I look for it? Thanks, James

charcoal filters
The filters we are talking about aren't on all the time and have to be activated via a button on the climate control panel. On the 210s, the button looks like a rudimentary drawing of the osmosis process, with arrows going from a light marking to a dark one. Your owners manual would definitely tell you if you had this option. Or maybe someone here could elaborate--did they ever include a filter which was activated all of the time, without a 'starter' button??
I doubt you have the option if you don't have the aforementioned button. |

The 210 charcoal filter is replaced every 45,000 miles.
