300D idle hone - new injection pump needed?

My 300D has had an odd idle for the past few months. Basically it does this revving thing where rpm's go up and down in about 3 second cycles, particularly when cold. The glowplugs are good. I have treated it with deisel purge.

I stopped by my mechanics this afternnon. He called it an "idle hone." He said that since there is no adjustment on the IP, it will have to be replaced or rebuilt!!!! Can this be true? I have always babied this thing's fuel system with religious filter changes and year round diesel additive so that this sort of thing would not happen.

Captain, please advise!!

Do a search on idle surge. There was a thread recently about some switching valves or something on the 2.5 intake manifold.

Seems like this phenomenon happens in waves.

I can't find anything in the archives for the 2.5. Maybe it wasn't this forum.

The OM603's had electronic idle control (ELR). I think some of the 602's had this as well but I'm not sure. Some of the parts are indeed replaceable, I'd start there before having to plunk down $800-$1200 for a rebuilt IP!

Good point.

Pull the electrical connection at the ELR actuator at the back of the IP. It should idle at a lower rpm. If the surging goes away, then the problem is likely in the ELR system, not in the IP.

This is a guess.

Thanks for the info, guys. I am not sure what all of it means yet as this is a very new area for me. I actually just posted yesterday regarding how little I do on this car that is not normal wear related.

My Performance Products catalog shows an Idle Control Solenoid and an Idle Control Mirco Switch both mounting somewhere near the IP - diagram is non-specific. What do these do? Can they be the culprit?

I recently needed to replace an idle control switch on my Grand Cherokee due to similar symptoms. Essentially what this did was regulate the position of the butterfly in the throttle body in responce to airflow. Does the 2.5 have something similar?

On the end of the IP towards the firewall, there is the electronic idle control unit with a wire connector on top. Remove this electrical connector and see if that problem goes away to test the ELR. Some 602 engines also have a butterfly valve in the intake manifold on the passenger side - Not sure how this works but I've never heard of it going bad. My ELR does not function quite right but my IP doesn't do this. Its possible something in your pump is broken.
