I've got a drum pump in my oil tank in the basement and plenty of Stanadyne PF to lower the gel-point.

Here in Idaho, we had been immune to the price increase... it went from $1.54 up to $1.64 and stayed there until this last week, we're now between $1.89-$1.95 for diesel. OUCH! Gas is still $1.69-$1.89 for 87-92 octane. Yes, you heard right, diesel is now more than premium gasoline.

And I have broken out the VW diesel, which gets 42mpg compared to my 124's 29mpg (for my daily commute). That was coincidence though - the 124 vomited a speedometer cable and I don't want to drive it until it's fixed - can't rack up miles without getting credit for them on the odo!

Regards,

Question

Diesel is $1.72, .08 more than premium gas in Iowa. Why is diesel so high when it is a by-product of the gasoline refining process. Is it the taxes that are disproportionately high?

Yes.

After the Reagan-era government delegated the costs of maintaining the interstates to the states, the states had to come up with a way of raising revenue. As trucks put the most wear on the roads, state govs. wanted to tax the trucks. Trucks use diesel, therefore, they taxed the diesel. You may have noticed that diesel prices vary state to state.

This was (I think) another reason the diesel cars ceased to be popular and harder to find in the 80's here.

This is my analysis of the situation, based on my notoriously unreliable memory of the deregulation orgy in the late '70s (that part was NOT under Reagan) and early to mid eighties. Anyone else?

My solution, use biodiesel!!!
