Window seal/channel replacement on a 123

I need to replace my felt window channel or seal on the drivers door.

I haven't found a good explanation on how to do this yet, other than to use the 3M Black Weatherstrip adhesive for installation.

Any tips on how to do this remove and replace operation????

Thanks

I need to replace these seals on my 300CD, but it is a totally different style of door/window. I think the replacement should be strait forward, just make sure you get the surface clean before you replace the seal/gasket.

My concern is:

How much disassembly of the door is required to be able to make the replacement???

The replacement is straight forward and easy. A few tips... When using the weatherstrip adheasive. read the instructions and don't over glue it but use enough to coat both sides(the channel and the strip) Also, let it tack up good before you mate the strip to the channel. THIS IS IMPORTANT TO GET GOOD ADHESION. Use the pressure of the window glass to hold the strip in the upper part of the door. (close window all the way). Then leaving the dood panel off. use duct tape or a light clamp to put pressure on the lower part of the channel to hold it in place until the glue is set.
You need to remove the door panel but I think that you can do it without removing the glass. Removing the glass is not that hard either.

jjalex,

Where did you fine the replacement window channels? I need to replace the ones on my '83 300cd. I have not been able to locate any. I have heard these parts are very expensive.

Marks88,

PartsShop has many of the parts, just give a discription of the part, and they can try and get you the part.

jjalex, pretty easy to take door panel off.

1. remove/unscrew door lock button
2. with little screwdriver remove black plastic trim that sits behind inside door latch(this will expose screw that holds door arm rest/handle on)
3. remove screw behind inside door latch and also screw underneath door arm rest. This will allow you to remove door arm rest/handle.
4. with a thin blade or srewdriver go around edge of door panel to loosen panel. There are some round plastic tabs that are pushed into the metal door frame that hold the door panel on.
5. remove panel (be careful when removing so that you don't pull on the wire harness too much for the window switch)

The panels (at least for my '85 300D) are made from what looked like maybe 1/8" cardboard or pressboard. Not exactly the best material for the job. Maybe thats why they needed the vapor barrier/plastic material.

Good luck,
Frank

Marks88,

I just called my local Mercedes dealer and they were gracious enough to sell me the felt channel for $33.

Sounds like I need to remove the panel to do the job right. I have done this once before to replace the door check, so it shouldn't be a big deal.

I hope it's obvious how to proceed from there....

Thanks

If you have changed a door check strap you will be fine with this. Just take your time.

Ok,

Let us know how it goes... my car needs them too. What about the outside "wiper" strip?? Does the trim just pop off and replace?

ARrrrh guess it's time to go through the door.

GENERAL REFERENCE INFORMATION

EVeryone should have one copy of Hemmings Motor News.. you only need one every ten years or so....because this is where companies that produce generic repair parts advertize...

Some cars just don't have any parts available with their names on them... that does not mean that the exact replacement parts are not still being produced...

Here are two companies in that category... so for instance, if you measure the channel you need to replace in the window mechanism... you can get one of their catalogs and see what is available...

Eh, are you sure you need to use glue/adhesive for the 123 window channels? On the 124 it's a friction fit, no adhesive used, pretty easy to replace (glass does NOT need to be removed). The 123 doesn't look that different...

I'll find out about the adhesive for sure when I remove the old strip.

The parts guy at the Mercedes dealer thought I would need weatherstrip adheasive. He suggested the Black 3M stuff, not the yellow.

We'll see....maybe even tomorrow.
