dumbest cooling fan question
its 11 deg F and I have pushed Phoenix, the 81 300TD into the shop. Here I sit, waiting as it warms, hood up, staring at the radiator cooling fan.
It has always puzzled me and since I have an hour and need to distract my mind from wondering why MB ever allowed a diesel out of a factory without a block heater, I pose this, the dumbest winter question ever posted to this great site. Why oh why are the fan blades on the electric radiator cooling fan set in an asemetrical fashion? Thank you all.....and may your winter mororing days be better than mine are this month Fish E Frank

You can buy block heaters. Think about this...Whynwould they want to put them in every unit they sold. The cars are not always used in cold regions
The fans are set that way to reduce noise

Actually, after a certain point in time (early 80s, maybe? not sure, but definitely by 1985) all the US diesels came equipped with the block heater, but did not have the electrical cord installed. Cars came with a coupon for free installation of the cord, if you wanted it. So if you don't have a cord, you still might have the block heater iteself, in which case I think it is fairly easy to add the cord.

Block heater
David is correct. My '87 SDL and my friend's'82 SD came std with a bl. heater. The dealer had to add the wire at delivery. SO, look under the front (pass. side on my 603) lower side of the block and maybe you have one and just need to add the wire.

My guesses on the fan semetry are 1. it stops some kind of resonance from setting up , or 2. it provides better hand access for wrenching.
