T-Chain Stretch

I recently acquired a 1987 190 2.5td with about 170k.

I've read quite a few posts about chain stretch, so I decided to look at mine this weekend.

I took the valve cover off and lined the two lines on the sprocket and the first cam cap and then looked at the harmonic (sp?) balancer and the pointer was right next to "O" on a capital "T". Does this mean I'm O.K.?

THanks!

Hey, I'm not a pro, but I can give you my 2 cents.
I recently had the chain replaced in my 76 300D with 280K on the old one.
It sounds like yours is fine. They say 4 to 5 degrees stretch is the limit, but that's hard to say what thats relative to because if the head has been resurfaced, it could be a brand new chain but not be on top dead center on the balancer.
I think some of the guys here think about replacement around 200K, but I don't know.

The correct way to get exact chain stretch is with a dial indicator. That said, if the marks align perfectly, I wouldn't bother with the dial indicator, I would be happy with it.

If the marks did not align perfectly, then it is time to get a more precise indication using a dial indicator.

Enjoy,

IT should read in degrees. The scale reads on both sides of zero. When I checked mine, I turned the engine cw a few times and then lined up the marks and took a reading. I did that about 5 times to get a average. That pointer can be moved if service work is done in that area. On my parts car engine with 175Kmi it reads 3 deg. Not sure where you are seeing "O" and "T". The factory manual does specify use of a dial indicator, but many have found the above described method &doing it 5 times to have enough resolution in accuracy. Just my $0.02.

I wonder why the Factory Shop Manual specifies the use of a dial indicator.....

On the 602 and 603 engines (maybe others), you can move the TDC pointer a few degrees. The manual has a procedure to set the pointer using a dial indicator. Why it's even adjustable is beyond me.
