'85 300D noise in rear on down shift

I've got an '85 300D with 254,000 miles on it. Whenever my car is about to come to a stop, I hear a "thud" sound in the rear. It sounds like it's coming from the left side. I recently had a rear left half-shaft replaced which makes me think it's not that. It almost seems like it occurs when it's down shifting right before I come to a complete stop. The car tends to jolt a bit when it happens. Sometimes it's louder than others. And no... there isn't anything in my trunk!

Thanks!
Brian

Hmmm, just replaced the half shaft on that side? that would be my first thought but....
Might also be the differential mount?

It may be mounts but I'm wondering if it could possibly be the way the vacuum control is set up on the car. I am under the impression that if the vacuum is not right it can make the car downshift with a "thud".

thud

If it feels like it's in the tranny try inspecting the vacuum line to the demodulator. If the line is severed or plugged you have low vacuum and . You will know it's coming from the transmission because the down shifts can be very severe.
