Beats me, #2 is all I've ever seen in California. You might find #1 in a colder place, but unlikely around the Bay Area. Every so often you'll see premium diesel, but I've noticed no difference between that and "regular". I just fill up where it's cheapest/most convenient and add some Rotella additive or Redline.

#2 is it. #1 is too light for summer use (low power) and #3 fuel oil is too thick to get through the small lines on a car -- its for stationary (read electrical generator) use. #4 is heavier yet, used to be used in ships, but they all use #2 now, and #5 and #6 are also called "Bunker C" and have to be heated to pump -- thin ashphalt.

Right. #2 is just a designation of type. It is not a quality rating.

thanks all. do all of you add rotella or redline every tankfull?

I add a couple of ounces of Redline to every tank to make sure my IP gets proper lubrication. Every now and then I'll put in a whole bottle, especially if I'm headed on a trip, so the system gets a good cleaning. Some may argue that this is unnecessary and they may be right but I figure it can't hurt and the psychological benefit helps me justify the cost.

I understand California diesel ranks among the nation's best, with cetane levels of 48 or better. If you want to burn ultra ow sulphur diesel, some Arco stations sell ulsd EC-1 (I think that's their monicker); check their website for a full list of stations.

bay area sources for better diesel
I am currently using ARCO diesel, which seems to run much better than any other diesel that I can find locally. Their website has all the locations, but I usually buy it in Richmond near 80 and Cutting, and I think there is one in Oakland near grand also.
You can also get biodiesel for around $3.00 per gallon with a carded account at olympian on Bayshore in SF. The way prices have been rising, $3.00 may become cost competitive with dino fuel....

Alec,
How do you get the Arco website to list stations with Diesel? Thanks, Sixto 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

here are some links to California EC-Diesel
http://www.ecdiesel.com/business/locator.asp
or http://www.ecdiesel.com/documents/ECD_1_offerlist.pdf The difference between this stuff and regular #2 was significant in both my cars. Even my wife noticed. Plus it is usually as cheap or cheaper than anything else. I just averaged 27.5 mpg for an entire tank on the SDL, so the mileage doesn't seem to be suffering either. Now Arco regular gasoline is another story- that fuel is just plain junk. alec

Arco just redid its website last Wednesday, so there are bugs in the link to ECD-1 ultra low sulpher diesel. Here's the link before the link to the list: http://ecdiesel.com/business/locator.asp.
The head of the program is emailing me a list of California stations that carry it. If you fail to find it online, contact me and I can email it to you.

Dana,
I couldn't get your link to work. The closest station on Alec's version of the Arco list is 15-20 miles from me in Hayward. If your new list has more NorCal listings, I'd appreciate a copy. Thanks, Sixto tabijan@yahoo.com 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

Sixto,
If you go to the ARCO website (I found it on Google) you can click on "Station Locator" and put in your zipcode and it will give you station locations within 25 miles. Look on the list of stations and you'll see a column for those that carry diesel. Unfortunately there aren't any anywhere near the city. LRG

Doh! I saw the map but I didn't scroll down to see the table.
It confirms that the Arco on Tennyson Rd in Hayward is the only one within 25 miles of Santa Clara. Thanks all. Sixto 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |
