MW Pump Timing - Throttle position
I don't know if anyone can lend some insight but here goes...
My 1980 300D has an MW type pump and when setting the start of delivery the manual says to wire the throttle at full open. When I do this the pump seems to be far too retarded (is that the away from the motor setting). When I set it this way I cannot start the car on a cold morning. I reset it yesterday without the throttle wired open and it started pretty good his morning. If not at WOT then I need to displace the pump one more tooth as I guess I missed the mark when reinstalling this last weekend because when I set it yesterday I am at just over a drop per second maxed in the adjustment towards the engine. Should the throttle be wired open or not? Or does this become a feel thing kind of like my old BMW when all was worn out. BTW - when sight checked, there is absolutely no chain stretch. The marks aligned perfectly. Thanks |

Not sure I follow you, what would holding the rack open have to do with timing? Adjusting the IP toward (counter clockwise) the engine would be advancing it, no? If the engine turns clockwise. I am sure some of the more experienced guys will chime in on this one. I never could get the drip method to work very well, but I am fairly new at this. I was shown the bubble method by an old retired German who swore it was the "BEST" way, what ever. If you want the low down on the bubbles let me know. |
I am fairly proficient (at least I thought I was) at the drip method but it seems that if you wire open the throttle on an MW pump it sets the timing retarded from non-open throttle.
I advanced it yesterday (moving it closer to the motor) and it starts much easier now on a cold morning 19 degrees this morning. |
Hummm
Sorry to be no help Fisherman, about the only thing I can say for sure is "move over to the coast its not so cold":D I assumed your pump was the same type as on my "80", maybe not, anyway someone will know whats going on. Good Luck. I will stay tunned. as this whole injector sealing ring and IP thing of yours has my attention. Steve |
