Ed,
Relax. Greg was responding to Jim's Puegot story, not Larry's engine destruction. Unless you disapproved of that as well? I too thought it was a little humorous, imagining a solitary arm frantically reaching over the fender, trying to locate the stop lever... |

OOPS!!
Thanks for that. It just didn't seem like Gregg at all,--good to know. Yeah, now that I imagine it, it is pretty funny. I sense some Monty Python watchers here...

I apologize for "whining." Things get a little overwhelming sometimes. I have complete faith that things will turn around. As I've said earlier, the family is healthy, we still have plenty to eat and a warm place to sleep. There are many, MANY people in worse shape in all different sorts of ways.
Have a great day, |

Yes,,, I should have put a salutation on it to the proper person...sorry,,,
It was the feeling of wanting to run, knowing that doing that doomed the engine, and wanting to save the engine... but being rightfully afraid of the dangers of the situation... so the image of Jim trying to choose an inbetween... keeping his head down but willing to sacrifice his arm / hand to try to stop it...... is funny because I have known exactly that panic feeling myself...no good solutions in that situation...... No one knows what they will do in this situation until they encounter it. I know firsthand the feeling. It takes much courage to stand there with a out of control engine screaming at who knows how many RPMs. Most people would run and let it blow on it's own.

on the 617 motor or any motor with an ALDA would yanking off the alda pressure line slow the RPM's down some to buy you some time?

Nope. With no load, there is almost zero boost pressure, so the ALDA is doing almost nothing. You need to kill air flow (which may not work), or better yet kill the fuel feed (which WILL work as long as it's not feed on engine oil).

I have decided that if I encounter this situation I am going to bend the metal fuel lines as fast as I can. Better to sacrifice them and perhaps the injectors than the whole engine....

YEah sounds like a bend the IP line thing to me too.
where do u start (if it matters) front of engine (radiator side) or back of engine (tranny side). For me trany side would be easiet, though that is not the situation for others I know

If you have all the proper line stabilizers on your lines it is a very strong unit... I am assuming that I will have to stick my foot on it to bend it... and my foot will pretty well cover all the lines...

I'd grab the little clear pre-filter and yank as hard as I could, to cut the incoming fuel supply. The hoses should pull off pretty easy. Maybe experiment on a salvage yard car if you have the chance. If you carry a Leatherman, pull it out and use the knife on the fuel lift pump outlet line. I bet that would kill the engine in 10-20 seconds, which should be enough time to save it...? How long do they run before locking up usually?

It seems like I read somewhere in this post back a while ago that it could run a minute or two with just the fuel in the IP and main filter. I agree the prefilter would come out easily and was my first guess to stop it as well but with this news either putting a board over the air intake or bending/ cutting the fuel lines seem to be about the only ways (maybe halon). I surely couldn't imagine bending those lines in an instant with much less than a sledgehammer! Where to start? Well have the head of the hammer take out the first line by the tranny and the handle of the sledge take out the others. At the very least it'd slow the motor down!
As for how long it runs before locking up, someone stated that when this portion of the IP is messed up it may change the redline to 6200Rpms so it would probably happen quite quickly versus just holding it at normal redline.

Changing the start-stop diaphragm for a vac-IP is one of the things (other than inspection and alignment) that I let my dealership do. If they break it they pay, not me (they have insurance)!
My condolences Larry, I know how a MB becomes a part of the family. ATLD |

Larry - Thank God it did'nt go any further than it did! (I'm not going to pretend that I totally understand what happened to you - I'm still learing about these cars) But at any rate - you are correct in remembering that you have your family, health and "everything" important in your life. And even with that - when things start to go awry - there is always the other side (the better tomorrow) Anyway - you will get there - I think you're one of the good guys. Bless you and yours.
