are w123 manual transmission all the same?
I know that there is a 4spd and a 5spd but apart from that are the transmission used say in the 240D the same as used in the 230/280 or even 200. Reason for asking is I have unit from 200T and am considering using it to replace 300D auto unit.

I have read here that the transmissions from the gas engined 123 cars will indeed fit a 616 or 617 diesel, but I have never personally tried it.
The transmission mating up will be only part of the problem. You will need shift linkage, the proper driveshaft mating and clutch pedal and hydraulics. I personally would not convert one unless had the entire donor car setting next to the recipient. That way, I can get every little piece right down to the proper trim, to make it a nice conversion. Good luck with the project and let us know how it comes out. Have a great day, |

Larry is right about the potential for costing many many hours if you don't have the donor car there with you ... and won't be easy even with it there...
I have long thought that hydraulic shifting mechanisms would be a good idea.... it would only take two masters and two slaves..... at right angles... Someone has said the trans will interchange... may have been on the vintage forum.... you will need the adapter plate from the donor car I believe...and then you get into the flywheel / balance questions.... guess you have read all the Ridge threads on swapping a manual into an auto....? |
