Good evening, tried to do a search but all I came up with were tranny gasket.
I will change the oil pan gasket this weekend and I would like to ask for some pointers in doing this as painless are possible. Anything to watch out for? Do I need to use a sealant?

Pretty stright forward. Drain the oil replace the gasket. No need for sealant. Torgue the bolts to 11 Nm.

I hope that you are talking about the lower oil pan. The upper oil pan requires engine removal.

Which one is the upper oil pan Chief? The one I will replace is at the bottom, where one would drain the oil at.

Look into replacing the turbo drain grommet, o-seals and air filter line while your under the car. Unless of course they are only a couple years old. These are usually pretty good leakers.

Thanks for the suggestions MBwerker. Will look into those things. I haven't ordered the parts though, just the oilpan gasket. Hope everything goes smoothly this weekend.

If you are leaking oil in the general area of the lower oil pan, it is probably more an issue with the turbo drain grommet than the oil pan gasket.

The turbo drain grommet is something you can replace best by removing the lower oil pan - so I suggest you hold off until getting the turbo drain grommet and the two o-rings that are part of that assembly.

The other thing under there that leaks is the air cleaner oil separator drain line. It has an o-ring at the top and at the bottom.

Both of these drains are on the passenger side of the oil pan.

Look in fastlane under air intake for your '83. The parts to get are the turbo drain grommet and 2 turbo drain o-seals. I always get the turbo drain gasket too just in case I can not get the drain line loose at the pan when I do this job. This is the gasket at the top of the drain tube/bottom of the turbo. It's held in place with 2 bolts. Fastlanes prices are low for these items.
I did not see the o-seals for the air filter drain line. A couple years ago I bought a metric o-seal assortment that comes in a clear plastic case for about $8 from Harbour Freight. I believe the o-seals are buna-n and they usually last as long as OEM seals. Sure wish I could find some viton o-seals in metric sizes. They hold up a long time and have a much greater operating temperature range.
