wiper problem

So, after the snow here a in New York, one of my windshield wipers has stopped working. At first, we thought it was just the weight of the snow on the windshield. Unfortunately, even with out it, it still doesn't work. Driver's side is fine, passengers "tries" to go up each time, but only moves about a 1/4 of an inch. Interestingly, if I lift it off the windshield, it will rotate back and forth in the air without a problem.

So, gave it a bit of a push, cleaned it, oiled it, made sure it wasn't caught on something.. Nothing. I hate the idea of putting my car in the shop over such a thing.. Any suggestions? Can anyone help me save what's left of my bruised male ego?

Joe,

It has been a while but I believe the wiper arm attaches to a splined stub shaft, and the connection is covered by the black trim part on the wiper arm. The trim piece pivots up to give you access to the splined connection. Sounds like yours has possibly unseated. I think the fix is to take it off altogether, clean up the splines, and then refit and retighten it.

Like I said it has been a while, but I am fairly certain yours is the same as my old 240D. Good luck, Jim

I had mine off of my 85 300SD and they use a taper lock not a typical spline. Lift the black cap off the base of the wiper and check the bolt. It's probably loose. Hopefully you didn't strip it. One quick tip: NEVER use the windshield wipers on your car to remove any snow or ice. Take the time to clear all the snow off the windshield or you will burn out the motor or strip out the taper lock/spline. Not a good thing on the old Benz's.
