Talking Making Her Roadworthy...

I just purchased a 1982 300D Turbo with 243,000 miles. The car has been sitting for about 5 months. I've been working on gas vehicles for years, however, I've never fooled with diesels. I'd appreciate any advice on what I should do to make sure this car is roadworthy. I know I've got to change the air filter and do an oil change. Beyond this, what is most critical?

Unlike gasoline, Diesel fuel doesn't evaporate out the lighter molecules making the engine hard to start. So nothing needs to be done. My good 300SD and 300SDL sit at least 6 months each year because I don't use them in the winter. In spring when its time to use them, I charge the battery if needed, start them and drive away.

Why would you have to change the air filter? What could have caused the filter to fill with with dirt when the engine was not running? The same goes for the fuel filters. If some fuel did oxidize in the tank causing some gunk to form in the tank, you would want to catch it in the old filters instead of new ones. So in case of the chance of this happening, carry some new filters with you. THey are a quick change, even road side.

Change oil and oil filter, OK if you replace the oil with synthetic oil. Otherwise, you will still have Dino oil in it.

I think at least looking at the air filter before starting it is a good idea.... and who can fault changing the oil ,... except some of the people on this forum are very frugal... by their own admission...one thing changing the oil yourself does is get you down under the engine where you can see other stuff which might need attention... always a good thing....
Living in the country I know that a sitting vehicle CAN get squatters in the air intake tube and air filter canister.... ( like mice)... so better to check than suck dirt and hair into the intake....

Hey,

Congrats on the new purchase! I recently got a 1991 and I changed oil and oil filter, fuel filters and transmission fluid and filter right away. Air filter looked good. I think it's worth changing them as you really don't know for sure their condition. I expect to drive this thing for a long long time, and I want it operating optimally.

Change all those filters and fluids--it can't hurt to have fluids that are too fresh!

Post-purchase to-do's

When I buy a car, I ALWAYS go through the following things immediately:

-oil and filter change
-brake fluid change
-coolant flush
-new air filter
-new fuel filter(s)
-valve adjustment (if applicable)
-new belts
-new glow or spark plugs
-new t-stat and sometimes water pump

Doesn't matter to me whether or not any of the above items had just been done, I like to do it myself and start on a clean slate with my fluids of choice.
