300SD getting a reward
Hey guys,
Ordered some new equipment for the 300SD today. I got a Nakamichi CD receiver and MB Quart speakers for the front and rear. They all will fit in the factory openings and I got a wiring harness from Crutchfield so I don't have to tap into any of the factory wiring, except for the speakers, which will be gone anyways. I have a Nakamichi CD changer at home and have been very impressed with it's quality and durability over the past 10 or so years that I have owned it, so I figured the car deserved a nice stereo as well. I'm going to love listening to Mozart et al through this new setup!

Hope all work's out well. When I get done with some minor stuff on mine, I plan on installing a cd player to replace original becker. I'll contact you for reference on that system if you say it sounds good and I don't have to go crazy replacing/splicing harnesses etc....

As big of a nut as I am on keeping things original, I just couldn't resist going "high end" for once. The original Becker died this past summer while we were in vacation in Florida so I ran to the nearest Circuit City and got a Kenwood and threw it in in my in laws' driveway, but I've been unhappy with it and besides that, my speakers are still stock and sound like 20 year old Mercedes speakers should  Sooo.....After some consideration, I decided to bite the bullet and get a nice, high end CD deck and some good speakers. MB Quarts are supposed to be very high quality, made in Germany. The Kenwood is going to be put in a friend's MB because he just wants rid of his Becker and doesn't care what goes in there, as long as it plays CDs! I thought the Kenwood clashed with my dashboard too much though

If it helps...
...my experience with the Nakamichi in-dash 6 CD changer appears here.
There's a picture of the installed unit in my 560SEL at the end of the thread. Fairly dignified looking and in keeping with the cabin interior, compared to the garish (to my taste, yours may vary) offerings available from most manufacturers today. The only thing I wish is that it had a rotary control for volume, instead of the small push buttons. Alternatively, a paddle, like the '90s Beckers, would be nice. Some recent comments suggest Nakamichi quality has fallen - the company seems to have changed owners a couple of times, but I have had no problems so far. I am using it daily. If you want more volume this unit accepts separate power amplifiers.

I like the idea of keeping my car original, but I wanted CD's and quality music, so I picked up an Alpine head unit, MB Quart speakers a Pioneer 300x4 amp for the MB Quarts and a pair of Pioneer 300x1 amps for the 12" JL's I had sitting around.
The sound is crisp and clear - perfect for the be-bop and cool jazz I listen to most often. If I throw in somehting like a bassy Incubus song, you can feel the air being moved by the subs I can turn the deck up to the max and still not have any distortion, but anything past 2/3 max volume is just too damn loud I'm impressed with the sound dampening of the 123. With the stereo turned up to the max and all the doors/windows shut, I can hardly hear the stereo, even if it's playing a song that's heavy on the bass.
