New 603.971 engine louder than old one..why?

I had a complete long block replacement about 2.5years ago at about 100K(in warranty) my complete(valve cover to oil pan)
engine was replaced not just the bottom end(short block) like some have had done.
I was speaking with another gentleman a while back who had the same thing done(he paid 50% MB paid 50%)...and we both noticed the new engine was louder than old one was ...even with the bent rods!...I was reading nthe brochure that I have from 1992 that says how whisper quiet and how it will totally change your thinking about diesel engines..lol
Well the old engine was whisper quiet...the new one is somewhere between the old engine and the 1985 SD I used to own
Any ideas on why this is the case?...beefier parts are louder?
