Hi all, the speedo on my 77 240D reads way slow. The odo is dead on but not the speedo. Can it be repaired, adjusted etc for a reasonable cost or is it something that once it's gone south stays gone?
Is it realistic to look for a used one, pay shipping etc and gamble it works or is this a common snafu and most old used one will also be shot? Thanks.

I'm about to get the speedo on my '81 300D fixed. I emailed Overseas Speedo (www.speedometer.com) for a quote and for my speedo it will probably be around $75 to adjust the speedo and fix the non-running odo. I think your 240D instrument cluster is pretty much the same as mine. You can also try to fix the odo yourself if you've got reasonably steady hands - instructions here...

Andy, thanks for the tip about Overseas Speedo. The odo actually works great just the speedo part is iffy. I'll drop the above folks an email.

No problem - though I can't vouch for the service yet, since I haven't sent mine off to them yet. I've heard good things from other people though. By the way, if you haven't done it yet removing the instrument cluster on a 123 is not that hard. I've already had mine out once to repair the dimmer. One thing to watch though is the brass fitting for the oil pressure gauge. Just be gentle with it. You can get the cluster out the front by passing it through the top gap in the steering wheel. Haynes shows the wheel removed but this is not necessary. It only took me about 10 minutes to get the cluster out.

NOTE: remember to not start the engine with the oil pressure line removed.
