Possible 87 300D purchase - seeking advice
I have a couple of questions, and am looking for advice on a possible purchase.
Specifics: 87 300D 190K, no rust at all, extremely clean inside and ouside. I mean really, really clean. Things that don't work: Cruise is intermittent - mostly due to the switch in the steering column being overused - or really used. Small issues like pass seat controls need cleaning, 1 rear window won't go down, blower fan isn't working (I've changed this on my 300TE, and know the job), everything else seems good. The car was truly 'lady driven' for 12 years by previous PO (person my friend bought it from). Her husband did the upkeep which mostly consisted of oil changes. Car is mostly original, and will need some basics at some point. Fan has metal blades (old style clutch) Serp belt tensioner - OK Vacuum pump - how to test? Locks work OK, cruse works when I can engage it (see below). Oil leaks - none AC - hose is oily, documented charge last year ELR - works Outside temp - works Sunroof is OK Engine - acceleration is very good, smokes only at startup (a good amount), no smoke after running. Runs rough for about 2 minutes after started, then evens out. Injectors were changed 1 month ago. Owner reports less than 1 qt consumption between 3K changes. Injector pump has a drip leak... this really concerns me. Looking for advice here. Panels - OK - present No trans fluid leaks at all. Ride and handling are very good, very tight, better than my 300DS and 300TE. His mechanic (I called him and he's my mechanic aslo, a trustworthy source) said the car is sound, and recommend driving with the drip as is. Price $4200. Any advice is truly appreciated. Thanks, Doug |

Where is the leak coming from on the injector pump? This could be a minor or expensive repair? Sounds like a good deal overall. I tend to use the 50/50 rule: If in considering a car to purchase I see $XXX amount of items that need repair, double it, and that is what it will need to be right. Knowing the mechanic is very helpful. Keep us posted, Haasman

The 603.960 engine is prone to head cracking. Has the trap oxidizer been removed? If the head is cracked, or develops a crack in the future, it's about a $3000 repair.
