Where's the Grease?
Hey Alternative Fuel People:
I've been hunting down restaurants like a mad dog and have found the same thing at each one. They all have "grease dumpsters" which are linked to a disposal company. The grease is a commodity and so they are not free to give it away. Sometimes they get a slight kickback and sometimes they pay a slight fee. It depends on the price of the commodity at the time. Most owners have been friendly to me and have offered me 5 gallons or so to experiment with. I have done this and its pretty easy. Heat the stuff and filter it and pour it straight in the fuel tank. However, with 4 diesels, I want a monster supplier. Any ideas? What have you all done? By the way, I've discovered that the chinese places have grease which seems liquid down to pretty cold temps. Don

Go to small restaurants for WFO
I've started a set up with the managers at a couple of nearby in-office cafeterias. Not much oil at each one (only about 5-6 gallons each/wk) but you know more about what you are getting too.
The smaller outfits are the ones that are having to pay to have the oil hauled away. Bigger chain restaurants contract with rendering companies for the haul-off. My collection activities are starting this week; hopefully, I'll have the filtering gear in place and running in about 2 weeks or so...just in time for dinofuels to be costing the lumpenproletatiat over $5.00/gallon if all goes according to plan in Iraq. Good luck on your greasetrapping! RL |

Don,
Since you are not that far away from the metro Detroit area a good place to try may be the Frito-Lay factory on I-94 in Dearborn. You can see it from the freeway and during the summer time you can smell the grease as well. What about the BetterMade potato chip factory in Detroit? I used to have the name of the head maintenance guy at the Frito-Lay factory. i'll see if I can dig it out for ya'. I'd like to get in on this alternative fuel stuff for my 300D and 350SDL. I'd love to see the look on people's faces as I pour this stuff into the tank. You can email me at frankie_z@rocketmail.com
