Sunday afternoon project

The road salt was not kind to my old ball joints this winter. In fact, they are making some of the worst metal on metal squeaking noises I have ever heard. So today I put the 300sd up on blocks and started taking things apart. This is the first time I have done any suspension work on any car, but I have to say, the job was not as hard as I thought it would be. I removed my steering knuckles and am taking them to a machine shop tomorrow to have the new ball joints installed. I have one question to ask some of you vets. When removing the grease cap I found that one of the contact springs was broken. What is the purpose of the contact spring. I'm hoping that I can find one locally to replace this one that was broke. Also how hard is it to install the repair kit for the guide rod on the lower control arm. Thanks

Chris in Indiana

The contact spring is for supression of electrical noise (static in the AM radio) which might be caused by rotation of the wheels. I found on broken on mine also, so I took them both out as I didn't want to risk having bits of the metal getting into the wheel bearings.

FWIW, if you get the wheel bearing kit from Fastlane, it comes with the static supressor (contact spring). My car didn't have them on either side before I re-did the wheel bearings, but I decided to put them on. I don't think there's a real difference, but i haven't really tried the AM radio...

AM is short for "Ancient modulation". Around here, it's the radio band where Rash Limburger and the rest of the talk show gassbags live.
