tranny clatter

Yesterday on the way to town we stopped briefly and the transmission linkage came loose from the shift lever it would not engage any gear or park. As it was in drive we turned around in a wide spot and drove home it shifted and sounded normaly.
Today I jacked it up and reattached the linkage. Then I took it for a test drive and there was a terrible clatter in all gears except reverse it was loudest in first it sounded like a stick in a spoked wheel and increased with speed, it shifted fine ,I am stumped?????

Just a guess, but I would get it up in the air again and search for a loose part somehere around the rear flex plate. Maybe a clip got into that.
The only other stuff would be internal with your transmission and that is not what you want to hear.
