1st time in the shop today, any ideas on W210?

I had to take my car to the shop today for the first time for something other than routine maintenance. Got a check engine warning (with the two squares superimposed on each other, saying, "Check Engine Electronics" The manual says this is a fuel delivery issue. Oh, and when my wife brought the car to me with this warning yesterday (her car is also in the shop--being painted gratis, for those of you who have been on the open discussion forum), the passenger side seat control panel was hanging out of the door by its wiring harness. Good thing she makes more money than and is pregnant or I would have.......

The car starts and idles fine, but I can tell some subtle differences in acceleration on the road. It gets to say 60 and stalls there for a couple of seconds before going any faster. It is not dramatic, but this is a fast car, and I drive it every day, it just isn't right. Out of the hole, it also seems to go to higher rpms than usual when I gun it, before shifting into 2 and 3 gears.

Can any of you offer some suggestions as to what the problem is, so I can speak intelligently with my mechanic?? Don't respond with anything that costs more than $1500. I told him to do a full-50K mile service while he had it too.

Everything on this car costs more than $1500. Just kidding

It's hard enough to diagnose drivability problems in person, and pretty durn near impossible over the internet. However there is one relatively common problem which causes the kind of symptoms you are seeing. The Mass Airflow Sensor (MAS, or MAF, forget which term MB uses) is known to fail. When it goes far enough out of spec you get a check engine light and little or no boost. I think MB shop prices the part at $200, installation is a simple ten minute bolt in.

If that's not it, I'm stumped. Let us know how it comes out, I need to know what's going to break next on my car...

I bet Lightman would know, but he's on vacation. I'm with jcyuhn, it's the MAS. (VW says MAF). And yes, narwhal, let us know what it is for sure. Mine's still on the original MAS, so I guess I better put some money aside for one of those.

BTW, the part is not listed on Fastlane. Partshop is showing several "Air Mass Meter" versions ranging from $200 to $400. Don't know which one is ours.

They will need to check your IFI system for DTC codes.
You might have a faulty air mass sensor (check the air box for warpage caused by turbo heat!!!!) or possibly a faulty map or boost pressure sensor. (look for plugged ports in the intake manifold where the vacuum taps are.) These will all cause the turbo to spill off any and all boost making the car sluggish.

Oxygen sensor gave the same warning on the E320S4 (gasoline). Sounds like you're on the right track JCYUHN.

Thanks everyone. You know, on a Friday, when you have to take your car in it just helps to have a support group. Alas, it was the MAS. Enrique checked the box for warpage, Dr. Diesel, and he said it is fine.

The part should be about $200 and I don't know about the labor yet, but I will post the bill when I get it. I have sent him a lot of business, so he is pretty kind to me on labor (ie 'throws in' fuel filter changes for parts cost only when I have my oil changed)

Thanks again.

jcyuhn....

..and other interested parties: new MAS, new air filter, fuel filter & pre-filter, mobil delvac 1 oil, new oil filter + check transmission (he has the special dipstic for the 'sealed trans'), brakes, cabin filter and all other 45K mi checks= $684.49 bill today. The MAS was $240. Total labor was $294.70.

The oil and fuel filters were at about 7500 miles since last oil change---well before the 10K when the FSS comes on , but since it was there....

I am going to buy a topsider and do my next oil change and fuel filter swap.

other checks

Make sure they check your muffler system while doing the 50K. Mine had a hole where tail pipe goes into muffler and the muffler hanger bracket was broke off the muffler. I had both of mine fixed with welds as I was out of warrenty I also had sun roof repairs and noisy window channels replaced under warrenty
