Injector Pump Rebuild
Help! My mech says I might need to have my injector pump rebuilt. (Major rough idle when warm) He says $1200-$1300!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ouch. Is this a non- DIY project? Has anyone ever had it done before and by who? I'm out in Southern California.

You can't rebuild the pump yourself, but you should be able to buy a rebuilt one on exchange for about $900. I think this might be a DIY project, but I have personally never done this.

Why not just get a used one at the pick and pull. They last a LONG time. I have seen them on eBay too. I would question your need for a new pump, get another opinion from a qualified MB mechanic to be sure. Good luck |
Definitely get a second, or third, opinion. It may just need delivery valve seals, or rebuilt injectors. Pretty rare to need a new pump. The R&R is a BIG job to DIY but can be done if you have time. But no you cannot rebuild it yourself unless you have a $20k Bosch test bench and access to Bosch parts.
Rusty (800-741-5252, rusty@mbz.org) is having a super sale on rebuilt 5-cyl injection pumps through the end of March, I think $550 with exchange?? But check out the other possibilites first. Usual problem with "bad" pumps is no power and/or terrible MPG, not rough idle. HTH, |
There is no way you can rebuild an injection pump (IP) your self. It must be put on an IP test stand to be calibrated. Only a Diesel injection shop will have a test stand.
Have you tried to adjust or replace the rack screw in the IP? This will usually cure rough idle. I agree that if the car runs good other than rough idle, the IP is OK. P E H |
Rough idle you say..
I thought that could be a rack-dampener screw. As far as rebuilt units-price varies greatly. If Rusty can get you a IP for $550, then so can Fastlane. They both use Worldpac which is the wholesale parts distributor. For the rack dampener, do some searching on the list. There was an updated screw- they are painted different colors. Make sure you have the new one. Michael |
