Old diesel jump-start procedure...

Will try to use a 240 to jump a DEAD '80 300 this afternoon...

Is this the right procedure?

Hook up positive to positive battery terminals, negative cable on donor car (running), negative cable on dead car to engine block or other "ground"...let glow plugs cycle once or twice...and then crank?

Your comments/modifications are MOST welcome!

Jim,

You have the connection procedure correct. But it might work better if you connect the cables and run the engine about 2000 RPM for a while. This will put a charge into the dead car battery and you will have 2 batteries cranking the engine, not one good battery and one dead one taking current from the good battery.

The engine will be cranked much faster by the above method and should start easier.

You'll want to run the engine run for 5-10 minutes, and probally at 2000rpm would be a good idea. You might even want to let it run for up to 20 minutes, but not at 2000 rpm the whole time.
