window regulator

This whole thing is the window regulator? Mine is cracked as you can see from the photo and just above the photo is cracked in another spot. How do I get it out? Can the window remain in or is it all one piece?

yep that whole bunch of arms

This site had a REAL good section on window lift repair for W126 chassis (300SD):

http://www.pindelski.com/ (it's subscription now - but this his stuff is amazing!)

It might be applicable. From what I remember there are three or four bolts in the door panel that nee to be removed (one I think is a different length - remember where it went!).

I don't see any of the bolts in your pic.

I can believe the ARM broke!

Thanks---well----I got it out. 3 10mm to take the motor off, and I forgot how many to get the regulator off. Had all but one and took a while to find it----had to use an extension through a hole in the door to get the rear most bolt.

So I take it most of them break somewhere else? I hate to get a new one only to have it break again because something else was wrong.

I don't even have a replacement yet. I know you are supposed to replace with a new one, but now that I know how to take it apart, I might see how much a used one is.

One question about door panel replacement. Removing the black plastic piece from the door handle is supposed to give you access to the mounting screws correct? Mine doesn't, and I cant get the door panel over the door handle once it is installed. Any ideas?

Black plastic piece

Take a small screw driver and pry the plsastic
liner that is behind the inside door handle (the one you use to operate the door latch) slightly back at the front and/or slightly foreward at the rear and it will pop out slightly from the locked in place position. It is fairly flexable and is easy to remove from there. When you are done, it will snap back in place with a little push. You can now remove the screw that holds the bazel in place. Slide the bazel up the grag handle a bit and you can see the large screw that holds the grab handle.

I got an actuator at a junkyard for $25. It looked good, cleaned it up, lubed it with white grease and Lockease dripless oil, and it's been working great for a couple of years now.

I hope we are talking about the same thing. It looks like you have the door panel off already.

It's a lot easier to get that inner panel back on with the window down. I pulled one off my right rear door to see why the window wasn't working (apparently a bad motor, I was hoping for an unplugged switch) so I just put the panel back on since I really didn't want to spend too much time out in the cold. Anyhow, that things a bugger to get back on with the window up!

Wasuchi is right. You need to lower the window all the way then align the top of the door panel so the top edge fully hooks behind the top edge of the door itself. If you've got it right the panel will just fall into place and align itself so the door handle won't be a problem. It's not hard but is a bit tricky since the panel can look like it's all the way in place at the top when it actually isn't.
