Different types of smoke for diesel cars.

Dear friends:

Could someone tell me how many types of smoke (while, black, blue etc...) there are for a troublesome DIESEL engine?

Please also give a brief description of what may be wrong depending on the smoke type.

Thank you very much.

Eric

Well, thick white smoke for any engine usually means a blown headgasket. Blue smoke on start up would be lekay valve guides/seal. Blue smoke all the time, worn out piston rings. Black smoke would be running too rich.

Pretty sure that...

White smoke on a cold start up is unburnt fuel, caused by lower compression & a cold motor.
