Webasto

Anyone have experience installing a Webasto Aux heater in their turbo diesel?

http://www.webasto-thermo.com

There's a number on Ebay Germany and I'm seriously thinking of giving it a try. I like the idea of being able to use a timer or remote to turn it on and off to heat the coolant...kind of like those command starts but you're only running this little unit instead of your car. Plus, you use them to supplement the engines heat on those real cold days. Up here in the far north when it gets to minus 35 my car will not heat up unless it is under load...going 60 on the highway fully packed and pulling a trailer.

Depending on the price, that looks pretty cool! I like the idea of being able to burn some diesel to heat up your block...for the 300D and especially for my pickup.

What's the price on the eBay ones?

Check out Ebay Germany and you'd be looking for a Webasto Thermo Top (benzine is gas) ... an Air Top is one that is forced air.

Seem to go for about 500-650 Euros (or more) for new kits...about the same in US dollars. I've seen used got for about 300-400 but usually without the timer or remote. They also sell them in the US and Canada...looked to be about $1,200 US or $1,800 Cdn.

I've installed one on a boat diesel, but never on an MB. IIRC, the dealer/distributor was out in Washington State. The one I installed was a quality piece of equipment. Unfortunately, it's been about 15 years since I did it, so I don't remember many details.

Inter911,

When I was importing MB's (gray market) in the early and mid '80s I ordered a couple of cars for family members with Webasto units installed. They are a factory option in Germany.

The local boat yards around here on the Connecticut shoreline are very familiar with them, and I have the one in my (now my son's) 1986 190E 2.3-16 serviced by one yard who has the franchise for the area. The wicks go bad if you do not use them frequently, but other than that they are pretty reliable. The models I am familiar with have two programmed start and duration settings, or they can be "instantly" started. They will run for up to 60 minutes. I have not used one in a Diesel, but I know they are available for cars and boats. If you are concerned with the installation, I believe Webasto can put you in touch with a dealer. Good luck, Jim
