I'm pretty sure mine was around $65,000 in 1987.. worth every penny!
Turbodiesel I think a figure around 55K(for the sticker) is more accurate as my mother has 420SEL of the same vintage and they were a bit more than the diesels

I think there is a point to be made here that regardless of the sticker many vehicles sold for WAY LESS than sticker...any mid 80's 123(especially when the 124 came out) and late 80's /early 90's 126 and any early 90's 124 sold for some where between $7000-12000 of the sticker...you have to remember at that time(unlike now) Mercedes had HUGE dealer markup in the sticker.
Makes the resale of some of the cars seem ugly until you compare it to the actual transaction price and not the sticker

My personal car had a $72000 sticker of which I think the original owner paid in the mid 60's
I remember when the 140 came out how much I thought the prices were unrealistic and the fact that the low end 140(300SE,SD) was about where the 560SEL had been sticker wise
but in the late 90's I think the 140's were HEAVILLY discounted..like maybe 10-15K off the sticker...so maybe they sold for what they were actually worth..??

but bottom line I don't MB could sell cars (in the current competitive marketplace) at those prices..hence you have replacement cars that are actually less(adjusted for inflation) than cars 10 years older

85 300CD Window Sticker

Here's one photo of the window sticker that came with my 85 300CD. A close up follows after this post. I was amazed to see how much these cars cost. Not much of a difference from a coupe to a wagon. I'll also post a pic of my brother's 87 300D sticker.

-Jamie

P.S. How do you post more than one photo in a post so you don't have to make more than one?

Monroney label

You can get a copy of the original window sticker on your Mercedes-Benz automobile upon request. MBZ calls the sticker a monroney label. You can fax (201-476-6213) a letter with your VIN number to:

Client Assistance Center
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC
One Mercedes Drive
Montvale, NJ 07645-0350

The quality of the copy may not be great, but it will provide the price and list of the options on the vehicle. It may be possible to request the label over the phone. I have always used the mail or fax.

BTY, my '80 300SD had a suggested retail price of $30,824.

Check out the EPA mileage, it's 22 ~ 25, which is exactly what most people get. Every now and the I see people worrying about not getting 30 MPG with their 617's.

The past 4-5 tanks, I've been getting 25-26.

Palangi- What do you get on your Isuzu Pup Turbo Diesel? I've been wanting to get one of those trucks for the longest but just can't seem to find them, or one in great enough shape.

My 300D gets about 23 or 24. Never seems to vary much. The Isuzu generally gets about 32 or 33. I have never seen another turbo diesel p'up on the road, although I have run across 3 others on this forum. You see Isuzu diesel pickups on autotrader occasionally, but very rarely do you see a turbo there. There are companies around that hunt these things down and buy them for export. I think most of the survivors have been shipped to Central or South America. Mine is in good overall shape. No rust, everything works except A/C. Small camper shell on it. I will take some pictures and post them one of these days.

My car was $24,000 in 1979, and in todays money that is $59,553.35. I accidently typed in 1977 the first time, and it came out to be $71,428.57 . I also typed in $50,000, which was what the 6.9's went to for in 1979, and that came out to be $124,000. I put in the same number for 1977 and it came out to $148,000 .

I then figured out what my stereo equipment sold for in todays money and I about crapped my pants . My speakers which sold for $600 for the pair in 1973, intodays money that would be $2,439.02 . One of my recievers sold for $300 in 1973, and that is $1,219.51. My other reciver sold for $620 in 1978, and that would be $1,712.71 in todays money .

Well, stereo equipment stays cheap because of competition and technological advances in production brings down cost. The luxury car market is less competitive, more oligopolistic and more labor intensive hence the more accelerated price increases.

so with that in mind why are new MBs the same price or even less expensive than 10 years ago?

as for the stereo equipment that applies to the mass market brands(Pioneer,Sony) etc...but more than likely... at the prices 123 was quoting he has high end pieces which very well might be much more today adjusted for inflation

Some people say that Mercedes has cut the quality (they don't make them like they use to) of the cars to appeal to a braoder market. Porsche 911 prices have accelerated faster than E300 prices.

It would roughly cost $2,000-$3,000 to buy a speaker of the same quality of those that I have right now, and close to $2000 to buy a reciever with the same power supply as the one that cost only $620 in 1978.

I was comparing this to the accelerated prices of the MB's. But when you are talking about some of the high end mass made stereo equipment from the 1970's, alot of work went into them, and many stuff sold for over $1000 .

WOW

Got my monroney label

24,020 if I remember correctly (its in glove compartment now)
Options were power windows and power sunroof.

My father paid 8,000 for our old 1983 Cavalier!
My mother paid 20,000 for her 2001 fully loaded Honda Accord V6
