cost of our cars new

i searched the forum and couldnt find anything similar to this thread.

I'm interested in how much my 84 300TD would have cost, at the dealer, in terms of today's market (IE the price in 1984 plus inflation). A 20 year old that drives a benz gets a lot of flack, so i tell people that its worth less than 3k and their car is most likely better in terms of proformance. Yet i wonder what this thing would have cost me to get right now, new.

feel free to post how much ur old deisels would have costed too.

It would have been $30,000-$35,000 new in 1984. In todays money I believe that would be $55,000-$60,000...

I had a inflation calculator site bookmarked on my old computer, but I can't find it when I do searches.

The paperwork on my 300D showed it was $27,000 in Sept. of 1985....... so I'm guessing that the $30-35k for a TD is pretty close depending on the options.

I second that. I was told that my 1985 CD was about $35,000 new.

Price List

From the 1984 Mercedes Brochure that I kept all these years:

East Coast Automatic:

300D $31,940
300TD $35,310
300CD $35,220
300SD $39,500
380SE $42,730
380SL $43,820
500SEL $51,200
500SEC $56,800

Can someone convert these to current prices adjusting for CPI inflation?

Re: Price List

According to the website that cooty posted, here's what everything translates into:

300D $31,940 = $55,451
300TD $35,310 = $61,302
300CD $35,220 = $61,145
300SD $39,500 = $68,576
380SE $42,730 = $74,184
380SL $43,820 = $76,076
500SEL $51,200 = $88,888
500SEC $56,800 = $98,611

All I can say is WOW!!!

Given that my car has some unusual options (for a 123, such as leather seats and an alarm), I wonder what mine sold for originally. AFAIK, the only option that my car doesn't have are heated seats...

My dad was cut a deal and paid a bit over $29,000 at Mercedes of Manhattan in late 1982. The car has all options except for leather (MB Tex instead). It was expensive, but it turns out that you get what you pay for.

I remember my Dad bought a 1977 300D when the W123 body just came out. EVERYBODY looked at that car when it drove by. I think he paid nearly $18,000. I remember his friends saying that he paid a lot and didn't even get leather.

Just blows me away that we can buy such an expensive car so cheap now. But let's keep it our own little secret, or everyone will want one
Went over to a friends house the other day. He sees me pull up in the Benz, and says " Boy, wish I could afford a Mercedes!" I told him it's the cheapest car to maintain I've ever owned. He was pretty surprised at that. Guess these old birds are not a real well known gem. Their loss, our gain
