Well, I think we are all on the same page here.

I dont like "low riders" either. The wire rims are retarded. The chrome is excessive. The paint is an eyesore.

I think I came across as a dumb thug when I posted earlier. In reality, I am a nerdy white boy who likes classic benzes and anything slammed.

I think you would all appreciate my taste if you saw my current car... I will post a pic soon.

Not my style but nice job. The rear wheels aren't cambered. Someone went through the trouble of reworking those trailing arms.

But then so is wearing your pants with the waist below your buttcheeks so you can't walk right and it looks like you blasted a load in your shorts, but some people think thats "cool" and the only explanation I have is there must be chemicals in the water today or something.
LOL. Reminds me of my junior/senior years of high school, the new freshmen were these thug want-to-bes wearing their pants like that. From time to time an upper class student would run up and behind them, pull their pants down and yell gangster. LOL I can't say I ever participated in this, but once had someone try to do this to me, must of been all confused because my pants actually fit me (had a misleading nike shirt on).

I've always had an itch to change a couple things on my W123s, say for instance the 14" rims. The only thing stopping me from buying the newer W124 16" rims is the fact whatever money I put into this car for things like rims, will more than likely never come back out of it come sale time. I do want an air dam up front. Not for looks, but for aerodynamics, just going to expand on the one already down there. I only get 28.5mpg, I want more. Who knows it may be a waste of time, or I may actually gain something, we will see....

rwthomas1 - maybe it would help if you thought of lowriders as "rolling art." They are not about performance, safety, or even transportation for that matter. They are about the wacky things one can do to express their personality using something on wheels.

I can't believe nobody has jumped on a couple things from 190rev's original post. You're the administrator for a 190 site and you're selling your 190? Will you be starting a W123 site?

Now this is what I really don't understand. You said "Sadly, I will be selling my beutiful white 190 in favor of a cheaper Mercedes." This implies to me that the 190 is too expensive for you to keep. And yet you propose to spend thousands of dollars on mods to your new W123. Maybe I missed something. Can you explain?

I had to beat PEH to this one. "It's worth whatever someone is willing to pay."

After an accident I decided I wanted to part with the 190. Even though it has a measly 2.6 Inline 6 engine, I have it lowered on rims, with exhaust, intake mods.... etc. I want to get away from a performance vehicle. I also dont like the rich boy image of the vehicle. While it is a pleasure to drive, I just don't think its for me right now. Mabye I will pick up a 16V in the future.

I will probably be able to sell it for $6000. I can buy a 240D for under $2000. I will spend a grand on stereo, $500ish on bags, and some for maintenance. The tint and paint will be done myself. I just want to make it look good again .. not trick or anything.

And of course I will continue to run 190revolution.net. Its more about the community than the cars for me. Even with a W123, I will still be an active administrator. In fact, we are just gearing up for a move to a phpBB based server. It will be great.

Cazzzidy - Hip hop?

Cazzzidy:

With a name like that you should be bumping down the road listening to "Uncle John's Band," not hip-hop! I'm guessing that's what your parents were into around the time of your conception!

Ride on! The MB diesels are great vehicles.

Rick,
If lowriders are "rolling art" then they are the equivalent of "dogs playing poker while smoking cigars" on black velvet. RT

it seems like...

the first page of responses seem to agree with me; buy it and don't mess with it. Keep it as original as possible.

Dude, after you drop the MB down to an old pack of Lucky Strikes, tack on a set of moons and spray it out drum-set metal-flake purple.

Cazzidy:

Why not just buy an old air suspension 300SEL 3.5, 4.5, or 6.3 or a 450SEL 6.9 with a shot suspension? It would be much easier and the thing will literally scrape on the ground, lol!

P.S.--It's funny how those of us with the M-100 Mercedes (6.3, 6.9 and 600) are always struggling to keep our cars from bottoming out and some folks WANT them that way! We've got plenty to sell you. They'll ride about 1" from the ground and should you ever decide to put one right, it'll cost, oh, about $5,000 minimum to redo the suspension.

Cazzzidy,

After reading this thread I am wondering if you got any of the technical questions concerning the suspension set up addressed. The array of opinions concerning whether to do what you propose came unsolicited, and unfortunately seem to have drowned out your original request.

"sixto" alluded to an issue you will have to overcome, and that is the semi-trailing arm, independent rear suspension geometry. As the wheel tuck into the wheel wells in the rear, they tilt inward. This gives an appearance of a broken rear axle at the extreme end of travel. It is not as fierce as the old split axle set ups on the "S" class of the '60s, but it is not the normal look of a lowered suspension on a truck or other car with a beam rear axle.

This was also not the case with your 190 which has the 5-link rear set up MB pioneered, and nearly everyone has copied for independent rear suspension these days. Part of the point of this suspension is to keep the rear wheel camber the same as the suspension deflects, or at least more so than the semi-trailing arm set up. To avoid this cocked wheel look in the lowered range of your W123 rear suspension travel you will have to make some changes to the basic suspension configuration. While the exact same situation does not occur at the front end, the steering geometry in the fully lowered position is possibly not ideal.

To get an idea of what you have to work with, given you have done this before, you should get a W123 up on a lift and look around. There is actually pretty reasonable accessibility, but I guess that would depend on what you are intending to do, I suppose. I also suppose one reason you have not really seen helpful responses is no one frequenting this site has done such a modification (for what ever reasons) and really don't have much direct experience to share. I know I don't, and likely won't, but I am curious about how your project will turn out. At least you are not dropping a Ford V-8 in there and chopping the back off to make an El Camino 240D conversion.

Good Luck, Jim
