Fuel Filter location

On a 1972 220D/8 the fuel filters are about to be changed, IF, I can find where the small pre-filter is hiding. Anyone know where it can be found?

1972 isn't that old!

debi, look under the brake master cylinder: two metal tubes coming up the firewall from the bottom of the car. Chase one to the top side of the secondary (big) filter, where it tees back to the injectors. This tube is the fuel overflow or return line to the tank. The other tube is the supply line, and goes to the primary (pre-) filter, then to the feed or lift pump in front of the injector pump, then to the side of the secondary filter, then out the bottom of the secondary filter and to the injector pump. Primary protects the lift pump, secondary protects the injector pump. Both need to be there.

Debi,

Primary filter should be easy to find. Start at the injection pump (IP). On the side of the IP, toward the left fender, is the fuel lift pump. It will have one fuel line going in and one coming out. The manual fuel pump is mounted on top of the lift pump. Follow the fuel line going towards the rear of the car and you will come to the primary fuel filter. Its a small cylindrical inline filter that has rubber fuel line hoses on both ends.

You should always carry a spare set of filters and know how to replace them. Even new ones can plug quickly if you get a tank of dirty fuel.

BTW, why are you replacing the filters?

damifino...

where the filters are on your car but do to it's age you may get more/accurate responses on the 'vintage forum'. Not to send you away, just there may be more people familiar there with your MB.

PS; I get the 'rights' to the response title
