W 210 electical query
this has happened before, but this morning it scared me into investigating. i have gotten in my car before, turned the 'key' to the first position for the glow plug indicator to indicate, and gotten nothing. the lights come on when I unlock the car, and some of the dash lights come on. however, no glow plug indicator, and no start. the light will come on on the third try, and she starts with no question that we have full power on the starter. it rained like h*** here last night. i can't remember if it was raining the previous times my car has done this, and don't know if it matters. I know the car had a faulty glow plug relay which was replaced before i got the car.
any ideas or similar experiences?? |

narwhal,
When the battery wears down you get a clear message from that electronic dash set-up. The whole thing lights up in red and tells you the battery is low. My kid left something on in it after moving it one night and the next day I got this ominous display. So, I think it might be something with the glow plug relay, and per the cautions from others on this site, running or starting with the relay bad leads to damaged plugs that do not come out. I would get it checked out quickly. Good luck, Jim

Every once in a while mine acts funny in a slightly different manner. I'll get in, preglow it - everything is completely normal at this point - then turn the key to start, and nothing happens. No noises, no dimming of lights, nothing. This problem may occur two or three times in a row, but then it disappears for a month or two. Wierd. I've not tried to have the problem chased down because it is so intermittent. Been doing it for years. BTW, my spouse says it never happens with her key, only with mine.

THE SAME THING HAPPENS IN MY E300TD AS IN JCYUHN POST. I ALWAYS ASSUMED IT WAS CAUSED BY THE SECURITY SYSTEM NOT GETTING THE READ JUST RIGHT

I have seen this before on 98 and 99 210's. It was EIS ignition
switch not clicking the circut 15 relay all the way over in the switch. Sometimes on the second or tenth try, it would work fine. Sometimes if you thumped the dashpanel right next to the key, with the key in the run position, all power would then come on-line like nothing ever happened. Weak batteries can cause this but, you will usually get a red display of doom when that is the case. Next time it happens, just try removing the key from the ign. and then re-insert it. See if that helps the switch completely wake up. otherwise, the EIS may need to be replaced (or at least slapped around!) You know, diagnostic pounding. Good luck DR.D |

Thanks for all of the replies. As always, lowered my stress level.
