A new shock(ing) question,

I bought new Bilstiens from the dealer today . When I got home;checking them out I noticed that they did not include the upper dust cover; which is to be exchanged from the old ones. The originals may be in a landfill in Charolotte. When I replaced them a year ago I took the cheap route and installed Gabriels
(the worst) and tossed the originals.

So my problem is that I can't and won't install them until I have the upper dust covers. Where can I get them or what should I do? I can return the shocks but I would feel foolish.
Any help and ideas would be greatly accepted!

Not that it's any consolation, but I almost did the same thing the other night. Luckily my friend was there to save me from myself.

Not only do you need the dust cover but also the rubber(?) dohickey (looks like a red tootsie roll) that goes on the shaft.

The insert that comes with the Bilsteins doesn't say anything about reusing these parts either.

Thebern,

When all else fails and you need a part, try the dealer and hope the dust covers have a separate part number.

You mean you didn't recycle the old dampers (what you call shocks). That's why you are being punished.

Seems like the new dampers should come with all the necessary parts for a complete repair.

The dust covers and the dense foam bumpers (Tootsie Rolls) are separate parts. I bet you can get them from FastLane (this site). I imagine the dealer also has them, as they wear out sooner than the shocks.

I got mine from Finish Line here in Miami, an indy parts house that has most everything. This was for the 1990 2.5 turbo

The "tootsie rolls" (mine were made of yellow plastic, the color of a neglected Ford bumper) were eroded over an inch, and the dust covers were mere shreds of their once-proud selves.

God luck!

on the other hand

I am going to the local 'U Pull it ' this weekend as they are putting into the yard an 82 240D. So I will pull the shocks in addition the other items I need.

thanks, thebern
