You want #2 diesel. I doubt if you can even find #1 diesel in Houston. #1 diesel is normally only used in extreme cold climates.
There is a lot of discussion on various fuel treatments. A lot of people swear by Redline Diesel Fuel Conditioner (available at Pep Boys). Some people use fuel treatment with every tank. Some people only use it when trying to help a specific problem. SOme people never use fuel treatments. I guess it depends on the car and the individual.
