How loud would this be.

car: 1984 300SD.

my center mufflers and my rear muffler are rusty and peeling. they aren't leaking or anything so they work. i was just wondering how bad the sound would be if i remove the 2 center ones and replace with a straight pipe. and change the rear one to a flowmaster or something like that. just wondering if it will be annoyingly loud.

Interesting timing, I was just about to ask if anyone makes aftermaket high performance exhausts for our diesels. I noticed today the top of the rear muffler has a hole.

So I will...

Does anyone make aftermarket high performance exhausts for are cars?

Thanks

Don

The flowmaster in the place of the rear muffler is not too loud at all, just makes for a deeper tone and more turbo sound. I did this on my car as a temporary solution to a stolen exaust, but I am in the process of welding up a better looking one right now. I do like the sound of it and the extra bit of torque it provides so I would definatley give it a shot if I were you.

I put Flow's on a 6.2 diesel van and I love 'em. I would put one on a diesel benz without hesitation.

Uh-oh. Don't do that, non-MB parts, blah, blah, blah. Aftermarket/freeflowing exhausts have been discussed here ad nauseum. As you can guess, the "loudest" posters suggest that MB factory systems are best, they are better made, offer top performance, you can't improve on perfection, etc. I for one don't buy it. I wouldn't replace a perfectly good factory system. However if mine were rotten I would, without hesitation, visit my local custom pipe bender and have a 3" aluminized system with a single 3 chamber Flowmaster "big block" series muffler installed. It will likely flow better, sound better and certainly be cheaper than a factory system. Not much point putting a 20yr system on a $3000 car. RT

I have posted about this before. I just unbolted the entire exhaust at the bend about 3 feet past the turbo, no muffler, no nothing, just a pipe to keep the exhaust gases out of the engine compartment. It is loud by car standards but I work with big diesel engines (Cummins, Detroit, International, Mack, etc.) for a living and I LOVE the sound it has. Most engines I went through school learning on had nothing at all past the turbo. I say, just try it for a week and see if you like it. If you don't you can always bolt something back on and be happy.:)

that would be fun to do :). but i need a form of muffler to be legal in missouri. so if i ever get pulled over i can point to it and say i have one.

Thats the joy of Oklahoma, no inspections! So all we cowboy hillbillies can do what we want to our "rigs." I'm not really much of a cowboy, but most of my friends are.

would using a Glasspack Cherry Bomb ($20) as the rear muffler cause any major problems?

rwthomas1 04-14-2003 04:57 PM

Wallknight,
Other than the car being louder, maybe, you won't hurt anything. RT
