best oil filter and oil

I realize this is not a new question on forum, but I did a search and found only stuff about oil leaks and such. My question is, what is the best oil filter for a 1983 MB 300 Turbodiesel and what oil would you recommend? Thanks.

Oil-Any multigrade universal motor oil, ex. Delo 400 15w-40, Rotella 15w-40, Delvac1, Amsoil, etc. Just make sure its diesel rated, 15w-40 for dino oil or 5w-40 for syn, and to quote LarryBible-"change it hot and change it often"

Filter-Mann, Knecht, Hengst. Stay away from cheap filters, Fram, etc.

If you search the archieves with the words "synthetic" and "oil," and maybe "debate," you'll find an exhaustive listing of oil discussion threads to read.

I use anything that's diesel rated. I don't have much choice around here. I used to get Delvac1300 at Costco by the case, but they stopped selling that, so I have to go pretty far to get Rotella T by the gallon. The things I do for this car...

How do you quantify which oil is 'better'? Filter?

Is there any meaningful scientific evidence that any single oil is REALLY better? Filter?

I think the reason this is such a popular question is that NO ONE REALLY KNOWS...

I'm fascinated by this topic...there is never a conclusion.

Delo 400 is the oil that I have had best luck with. Mobil 1, if you have money burning a hole in your pocket and you don't have a bunch of oil leaks...
Hengst filters are the best ones to use, I think I am using Hengst for all the filters on my car...

Cheese cloth and any soy based vegetable shortening should fit the bill!

We have some real oil pros... who know the real stuff... and have posted... but the reason I chose the Delo 400 was that Mercedes had it listed as recommended... and so did my lit for my Ford Diesel Tractor... so I just get it for both.....

Serious consideration should be given to Castrol Syntech....it is a very good CH rated synthetic oil. It also supports the company I work for (BP). I use it in all my vehicles...gassers and diesels.

BEST FILTER = Factory MB (OE), Hengst, Mann and Knecht. Don't use McParts filters (Fram, Duestche (sp?), etc) - they're junk.

BEST OIL = diesel rated synthetic, preferaby Mobil Delvac-1 5W-40, Mobil-1 15W-50, or any Amsoil/RedLine diesel synthetic. The stuff MBNYE mentions is probably OK too. Just do NOT use Castrol SynTec or any "synthetic blend". And don't use any xW-30 weights of Mobil-1.

(If you insist on dino oil, Delo-400 or Delvac-1300 is about the best out there. Rotella isn't.)
