Question What Is It?

This rig is the first MB I ever owned. As most of you have figured by now It's not OEM instalation so there for I can only guess what to search by when looking for parts by vehicle model number. Dosen't help that I have no real clue which of the MB models came with the OM617A motor.

Can someone throw a list at me of models with 617 turbo engine? Specifically the ones manufactrued around 83, 84.

Better yet, anyone know how to determine more exact what engine I have?

A member of this board was kind enough to email me and let me know the location of the engine number on the block. Armed with this he and I should be able to find out more about this particular engine.

I'll let you folk not when I know more.

engine #

Well Ridge pointed me to the spot on the block by the Oil filter canister (thanks Ridge).

Here is what was there. I read it by rubbing chalk board chalk on it. Think I got it all.

# 617 952 10

OM617A cars

If I'm not mistaken, the following MBs came with the OM617A engine:

300D Turbo (W123), 1975 through 1985
300SD (W116), 1977 through 1980
300CD Turbo (W123), 1981 through 1985
300TD Turbo (W123), 1979 through 1986
300SD (W126), 1979 through 1985

I hope that helps a little...I don't have any info on truck engine/models.

Wes

Based on the first 6 digits of the engine number (617.952)
the engine is out of one of these:
a 123.133 (123 chassis 300D Turbodiesel, which is a sedan)
a 123.153 (123 chassis 300CD Turbodiesel, which is a coupe) or
a 123.193 (123 chassis 300TD Turbodiesel, station wagon)

After the 617 952 10, there should be an additional serial number.

Thanks Gilly,

What would be the format of the missing portion of the serial number? I'll look

If what I was told is true about this engine then it may be that there is no additional serial #? As in the engine may have never been stamped with further #'s cause it was never intended to be in a car/truck. This engine "suposedly"remained on a stand at a technical institute in germany, being used to teach the principles of diesel engineering. The PO worked for the univ.

I believe it would just be 6 additional numbers. Based on what you are telling me (that it was on a display stand) then I'd say it's possible there is no serial number (production number), that it was never assigned one. This may cause some problems in obtaining spare parts, as some part designs will change through the engine production run. In otherwords, and I am just making this up, suppose you need an oil pump. They will look up the oil pump and it may say that this one part number oil pump fits from 000001 up to 345600, and then there is another part number which fits 345601 up to end of production, so it may be important to know when your particular engine was made in relation to the production run. In your particular case it MAY be safe to assume it is an early production number, before they started serialized production (used for pre-production familiarization), but I could be wrong about that.

All I know is the fuel filters on it seem to match with those for years 83-84

Another KEY issue is the '10' in the ENGINE # . . . It indicates MANUAL transmission, which is NOT a PASSENGER car application in the US. It can make obtaining some parts a crap shoot.

In the 'Good ol' days, MB had Parts Specifiers working in their parts distribution depots, who had access to MASTER FILES that allowed many part numbers to be crossed over from one application to another. And they knew their stuff . . .
