'84 300TD 'clacking' door check 25 cent fix

I've been living with the clacking when the driver's door goes into the detents.....Out of desperation, here is what I came up with that has worked for me:

First some definitions, so my method makes sense:

Door check strap:
The extension of the check unit mounted in the door itself. It has a cylindrical end which accepts the check pin.

Door check receiver:
The part welded to the car body in the forward (hinge side) end of the door. The part has two bosses with holes in them to accept the check pin.

Check pin:
Attaches the door check strap to the door check receiver.

The problem of course, is the check receiver breaks loose, and when the door is opened and the check unit in the door goes into the detents. the shock jerks on the check receiver and causes a
'clack'....One fix is to drill holes in the door jamb and 'pool weld' to reattach the unit....sounded a bit difficult to me, and I did not want to repaint.

I think what causes the thing to break lose in the first place is the check unit in the door becomes worn causing harsher detent action....so first I replaced this unit.

Remove pin (drive out with a a punch). My part had about a 1/4" movement in and out of the jamb....I didn't have to worry about it falling into the area behind the jamb. Verify this before you let go of it!

modify a 1" OD, 1/16" thick stainless steel fender washer (this has a small 1/4" or less hole in the center. Grind a flat on opposing sides until the washer is a very tight fit and centered between the door check receiver bosses.

Drive the washer between the bosses. A small vice grip can be used to hold one boss in order to seat the washer with a punch or large flat blade screwdriver.

Grease the pin, position the check strap, and drive the pin back in with the punch...dont forget the washer on the bottom.

Reinstall the clip on the bottom.

As it turns out, the thickness of the 1/16" washer sets up close to a zero clearance between the check strap and the door jamb which probably holds the part in place. If the washer is not quite seated, ....driving the pin in will fully seat it.

The result is, the door opens smoothly and quietly.

I hope it works

I am moving into a new house (with garage!!!) so I can finally get around to doing some minor repairs off the street.

The clanking check strap reciever was #1 on my list (the epoxy I halfheartedly tried several months ago only worked for about a week.)

I will give this a try, it sounds like a high probability fix.

I will let you know.
