It wasn't the fuel filter, it wasn't algae, it wasn't a pinhole....It was...
Drumroll please!
A crack in the rubber part of the throttle linkage. Not sure what it's called, but it looks like a pivoting point, and it's located right in front of the firewall. THe pic doesn't show just HOW cracked it is, it's nearly 3/4 of the way through. Press on the gas pedal and it just splits apart. No wonder we're going nowhere fast (actually nowhere slow:p ) So, the plan is to try to remove it from the parts car, although it will make that car harder to diagnose when we go to work on it. Oh well. Any tips on this repair?

That is really funny... step on the gas and your linkage acts like a slinky....but that is SO much better than the other problems which this could have been that I am sure you are feeling pretty good.
Of course, we here at " DIY Central" always think differently from others... 1. go to a junk yard close and take a good one . 2. order a new one. 3. Order Ben Ridge's kit on makeing reproductions and cast your own replacement. |

Get one at a junkyard. Maybe you can just put a hose clamp around the rubber part to hold it together? That would be REALLY easy. RT

That would probably defeat the purpose of it being rubber in the first place...whatever the purpose was...

First of all, good job on the diagnosis, Doctor.
Secondly. HEY, this is your THROTTLE linkage. I don't think you want a shakey fix here. My 1982 300D had to have this part also. The replacement part has been redesigned to use modern materials in a configuration that is much stronger and will not decay like the original. This was one part I HAD to have badly enough to go straight to the dealer. Their price was something on the order of $45. The part is also available from Performance Products, cheaper, and probably here from FastLane. I can do some research and get you the part name later this weekend if no one else finds it. Ken300D ------------------- Wow, a database search engine is great! Here's a previous thread describing this part. throttle linkage on a Mercedes 300CD |

She's a Rocket!!
I just took my girl for a drive, and WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! My Belinda is a veritable rocket!
Ken, the cracked part is not going on to a car we are actually driving. We have 2 cars, a parts car and a daily driver. We took the this part off of the parts car (it has half the mileage, but overall hasn't been taken care of) and put it on the daily driver. The fixed one went on the parts car, which we won't do more than start now and then as we try to determine what is wrong with the motor in that one. So not to worry, it's not like I've got bubble gum holding it together as I go down the freeway! Natalie (doing the Snoopy dance!! )
