617 turbo at 170hp?

I got this information on another board.

Quote:
OM617 ..factory specs. This motor was designed to run for 500,000 miles with 14 psi boost. .......... in order to meet 1980's EPA requirements for NOx emmissions many engines were delivered with the ALDA set on the lean side and the boost set to the lower end of the spec. Your engine should make 170 hp @2400 rpm and do so for a very long time.
I never saw the 170HP rating before. I had read about detuning to pass American Emmisions but did not know it was that big of a detuning. Any comments on this?

ohhh and my engine was never tuned for America as far as I know. It has about 7.25psi in booste.

I think he meant 170 lb/ft of torque, which is the correct spec for these engines.

But you bring up an important point... Did you know that Mercedes cars (at least the ones from 60s-80s) were tuned to 30% capacity... A Mercedes car of these eras can easily handle more power and torque. Makes you wonder the true potential, but then again, they wouldn't last like they do...
