clutch slave cylinder
Just got a 81 240 d, 220,000 miles. The guy I bought it from told me there was a problem with the hydraulic clutch/ brake reservoir, it keeps using fluid, that it was leaking at the clutch slave cylinder. What will I be looking for tomarrow, when I take a look at it ? thanks

I had to rebuild mine last summer after buying a 1982 300D. You need to find out what the brand of slave cylinder is (mine was FAG) and then order the rebuild kit which gives you a new piston ring and a dust seal. Two bolts hold the slave cylinder in place but the worst part for me was that the nut holding the hydraulic line in place was rusted which meant I had to remove the line as well back to the flexible connection near the floor. That was rust as well and had to be cut. That meant a new hydraulic line from the master cylinder. Anyway hopefully yours is easier. Replacing the the two parts is not difficult and then you just need to reassemble and bleed the slave cylinder from the right front brake bleed (needs two people). No problems since with mine. Good luck!

I would suggest that you diagnose for yourself rather than replacing parts based on someone elses, especially when that someone was selling you the car.
Check all four wheels to see if there is any fluid anywhere. Remove the drivers side kick panel and check for leaks at the master cylinder. While you're there check the soft line that goes from the master cylinder to the reservoir. If all that checks out, then examine the slave cylinder. Is the clutch operating okay as long as fluid is in the reservoir. Are the brakes working okay. Enjoy your manual 240D. I believe that when it comes to reliability and longevity, a well cared for example of this great car can't be beat. It might be the most reliable, long lived car ever built IMHO. The fact that it is so simple to work on adds even more to the value of this masterpiece. Good luck, |

WOW !!! what a quick responce. Still too wet to get outside to work on the MB. It is the clutch side that is the problem, peddle is always " on the floor " in the morning, and works fine when you fill the reservoir up and pump on the clutch peddle till resistance gets built up, runs works great after that. thanks

Linski,
You will need a hone to clean out the bore of the cylinder or it will probably still leak because usually the leak is caused by rust in the bore. P E H |

where ?
I pulled the clutch slave cylinder off, got the numbers off of it, called 2 local parts stores, $90.00, and no rebuild kits available. Where do I go from here ? Sure would like a kit.

Click on Fastlane at the top of this page and look for your slave cylinder. I just found it there for about $40. It's usually on your doorstep in a day or two.

Linski,
If you can't find parts anywhere else, try a MB dealer. Paying more is better than no parts at all. MB carries parts for older cars, unlike GM who doesn't care about people who want parts for cars 10 years or older. P E H |

P.E.,
Amen to that. None of the American car mfg's care squat about the guy that wants to keep a 10 year old car on the road. Of course that's not really a problem since they're worn out in less time than that anyway. Have a great day, |

linski,
Sorry I was away and did not have access to all my files. If you are still looking for a rebuild kit, I got mine at Smothers Parts International http://www.smothers.com. They used to have an online catalog but now you have to send an email for a price quote. Good luck, Paul Crawford
