It looks like a vacuum line with a filter attached to the end of it :confused:

Where is the line running from? I am guessing it might have something to do with emission controls :confused: I'm not all that familiar with the W124 cars...

Yeah, that's some kind of filter that has to do with the air recirculation. I'm sure that Dave M. could elaborate. :) On the 603 powered cars, it helps to disable the whole thing, but I think if you do that on a 602, the engine goes into "limp mode" or something like that.

Concerning that picture in post "What is this", in relation to my '81 240d 4 speed, just in front of the relay box towards fire wall and in front of my injector punp I have another devise that looks vaguely like my cruise servo and it has a thin gauge bare wire poking out of the end of it about 2 inches and a bunch of cut electrical wires out of the bottom of it. All the electrics to the cruise servo have also been cut by po's. I'm now thinking it maybe an after market cruise actuator. Funny because there's no cruise stalk on the column.
I'm not worried about it, just curious.
Also trying to adjust idle speed, too high. At idle both throttle and cruise cables have play so they're not keeping the idle high. Are there any other mechanical adjustments I can make to lower idle. Seems to be some kind of mechanical stop linkage down between block and injector pump. Any ideas?

Hmmm - good question. It does appear to be related to the emissions control systems, looks like a vaccum vent (not signal) line. Hard to tell though. My cars don't have any vacuum plumbing on that side of the car, and I've never worked on a 2.5 Turbo. I'd poke around some more and see if you can find what it was supposed to connect to...?

My 140 series has one of these and from what I can tell it is a vacuum filter going to atmosphere. If needed I can post a photo of my emissions sticker under the hood. It has a drawing of it with all the vacuum lines.

Could that be one of those filters they put in the vacuum system on the newer diesels to provide visual detection of the unwanted presence of oil in the vacuum system?

I may be off here but I think that the diesels have a pump that creates the vacuum and this is plumbed to that unit.

Are you sure it's not for the windshield washer
 

I thought I saw a filter like that on a washer solvent line before.
