W115 Turn Signals

This is my first post and I hope it is in the right place as it is about a 1974 240D. After replacing burned out bulbs and a bad flasher, my turn signals work but I have to physically hold the lever in place to get them to flash. All other functions of the turn signal stalk work fine. Do I need to change the Combination switch or is something possibly not adjusted properly.

Thanks,
Dan

dang50,

I believe if you disassemble the one you have you will find there are some plastic pieces that used to have (and you should see remnants when you get it apart) detents for the blinker setting mechanism. These detents get worn off over time. But they are not a complicated item and can be re-established with a file. I think you should have material for at least one regrinding/filing to make the detents work again. Depending on how you do it, you may only get one shot. It has been a long time since I did this on the 1971 220D, so I don't remember exactly what the disassembly procedure is anymore. Once you get past about 35 there is not much good to say about the aging process. Good luck, Jim

Check out this link. The pictures show you how to fix your problem.

Thanks to all. I have the problem repaired. It looked like the procedure had been done before and it looks like this is the probably the last time it will work. I just recently got the 240 d and I am very pleased with it. The last owner said the owner previous to him had the engine rebuilt and then he died and his wife didn't want the car. It seems to be a pretty good car. Some rust problems in the floor on the drivers side and in the trunk. One of my brothers is a welder and I hope to get him to look at it soon. If he can cure the rust, I look forward to a long relationship as this is the first car in a while that I like to drive. It is the first car I have had in twenty five years that has a personality. I have gotten too accustomed to cars being transportation. Thanks again. I'm going to try to archive the pictures to a floppy as this is very useful information.
