Strange plugs which are interspersed with glow plugs.

Dear friends:

On my 1981 240D, I saw 2 strange plugs which are connected
to the same engine side (right facing the front of the engine) as
the 4 glow plugs. You can see them clearly as 1 and 2 on the attached image. What are these 2 strange plugs and what are their function?

BTW, the plug #1 has an attached connector while the plug #2
doesn't have anything. Am I missing some connector here?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Best regards,

Eric

Eric,

From the shop manual I have for my 240D, the item labelled #1 is the preglow system temperature sensor. This thing has an input to the little black box that energizes the glow plugs that is used to figure out how long the dash light should stay on before you twist the key to engage the starter.

The other one I think, as was noted in the other thread, the sender for the engine temperature display in the instrument pod on the dash. It is not clearly identified in my manual, however, I think it has a socket like connector. Look at the end of it and verify there are no threads for one of those other mysterious electrical connectors.

I am curious, when you start the car, does anything on the dash work? Seems with all the cut and loose signal and other small wires, you should have a bunch of stuff that does not work. Knowing what they are might help sort out some of those unidentified wire stubs and loose wires. Good luck, Jim
