83 300SD fuel strainer

How do I get to the strainer in the fuel tank of my 83 300SD? I can't find the appropriate section in the CD manual.

Thanks,
Sixto

Try section 47-700 for tank and a blurb on strainer.

Thanks!

Do I have to remove the tank to remove the strainer or can I pull the strainer from below? Looks like a CV joint is a little close.

I can't remember where the strainer was but behind the rear seat back there is a plastic cap in the bulk head pop that off and remove the big nut and you can pull up the gauge tube etc. I also at the same time removed the fittings from the bottom of the tank but I don't remember where the strainer is, but I do remember it was fairly course screen. I had a bad case of algae in an 84 SD and the sreen was not plugged up but the tube for the gauge was all gunked up, there is a little hole at the bottom of it that needs to be cleaned.

Sixto,

Yu get at the strainer from the bottom if its like my 300SD. Remove rubber fuel line where it connects to the metal fuel line and drain tank into a container. Its easiest to do when tank is almost empty.

Screw out the strainer with a vise grip pliers and clean it. Unless the strainer is torn or ruptured you don't have to replace it, just clean it.

Spock, the chemical doesn't vaporize the algae, it simply kills it. The dead algae still needs to be physically removed.

Rick is correct. You'll need to remove the dead algae particles. If you had a bad algae problem you would probably need to go in and clean the tank screen and the pre-filter and main filter. Depending on the severity of the algae outbreak, you might need to repeat soon after. This is because after the algaecide has killed the algae, it tends to release from the tank walls and work its way down into the fuel line path.
