Sold a car, bought a car...

Well, it's sayanara to my late, lamented E300 turbodiesel. I've had it posted on autotrader ( http://www.traderonline.com ) for about the past month. Yesterday it was picked up by a shipping company and is now on its way out to Danville, CA.

I listed it about the same time the war began. Predictably, not much happened for a few weeks. But once it appeared the war was winding down the calls started rolling in. It was an interesting selling experience. I got a call last Wednesday evening while furiously trying to get organized for a big weekend cycling trip. Talked to the prospective purchaser for about 30 minutes. We agreed on a purchase price, and he overnighted me a cashiers check. I mailed him the title, and the shipping company came 'round to collect it a few days later. Darn easy transaction. In a way it made me nervous to do business like this, but in a way it's nice to know there's enough faith and trust out there to do such a transaction.

Anyways, I bought a gasser to replace the 210 chassis. It's a single model year special - a 1993 300E 2.8. Not a terribly exciting car to be sure, but I'm just looking for inexpensive transportation. This has to be the cleanest used car I have ever seen in my life, and I've got darn high standards for such things. I purchased it from the local MB dealer - it was owned by the sales manager for the past four years. In terms of wear and tear, it has one door ding. That's the only sign I can find that it's even been driven. It's a starmark car, so everything has been taken car of right away. It's had most of the common 124-isms covered - radiator, wiring harness, head gasket. About the only problem area not addressed is the evaporator, but the a/c works marvelously and has never been serviced. (I've got the MVI in front of me.) The only things it seems to need is an alignment and a brake fluid change. Every other used MB I've purchased needed $2K of reconditioning to be brought up to my standards. Not a real jazzy car, to be sure, but it rides, looks, and drives better than a brand new Honda or Toyota and cost about half as much.

Now my only concern is whether my wife can remember which car burns diesel and which burns premium I'm only half kidding.

Nice job, Jim. The new 300E sounds really great. I see that you avoided posting the amount you got for the E300. If I'm not being too nosy, would you mind PMing or emailing me the selling price? I like to keep up on these things. Thanks.

It should be a great car for you.

The 300E 2.8 was a one model year only car, I guess to take the place of the departed 300E 2.6.

The 1993 300E had the 3.2 liter M104 engine.

I'm sure you know that your engine is the same one used in the C280 from 1994-1997.

Had a '93 300E 2.8. Great car, I loved it to death. Only got rid of it to get the ML320. In all the years I owned it, the only problem I had was a wiring harness which I replaced at my workshop. Keep a watch on the head gasket at the passenger side rear for leaks, a common spot on the 104 engine.

Actually, that's one of the great things about this car. Being owned by a principal at the local dealer (Ewing) and Starmarked, it has had everything fixed.

It's already had the head gasket replaced, the timing cover resealed, the wiring harness replaced, and the radiator is relatively new. About the only 124 problem area left is the evaporator. Since it's an R-134a car from the factory, I wonder if that changes the possibility of a failure?

To me it seems a little bit low on torque, but I'm accustomed to the big bottom end rush of turbodiesels. I guess with 195HP on tap (right?), it'll go pretty good when revved a bit.

Any of you folks know what I should expect in the way of fuel mileage on this puppy?

I know my opinion is just anecdotal, but I've come to understand that evaporator failures are much more common on earlier W124's (pre 1989??), and relatively uncommon on later ones.

I've also noticed that the failure rate seems to be much higher in humid climates, FWIW.
